KENSA’s fourth anniversary: much to celebrate

By Justin Facey

KENSA has reached its fourth anniversary and it is time to congratulate ourselves. Simply because we have completed our fourth year, something that is always satisfying and makes us wiser; but, in particular, because of all that we have achieved as a team in this time.

Our recipe for success was recorded from the very start

When, four years ago, I decided to set up this company, on the basis of my experience in the logistics sector, I had a very clear idea of the kind of service I wished to create: one focusing on the client’s needs, one provided by people capable of offering creative solutions and one that is supported by highly innovative technology. I knew that this was the path to follow in order to be successful. However, not even the best estimates could have predicted such major results or such a quick path. There is no doubt that all of this is the result of taking the right decisions and availing of broad experience.

KENSA started off well, despite the circumstances, which were by no means easy or conducive to business ventures. Moreover, just when our position was becoming interesting and we had won the trust of a significant client portfolio, the Covid-19 health crisis occurred. Nothing has been the same in international trade since the eruption of this world-scale perfect storm that has yet to abate: closures, congestion and diversions in ports, missing containers, exorbitant freight hikes and panic situations that no expert in the sector had previously experienced. Interestingly, it was in the face of this extremely difficult scenario that KENSA proved that the principles with which it was founded were correct and that our model of logistics services is the one that can help clients reach their objectives. For us, 2021 was as difficult as it was successful, as I explained in this site a few months ago. Furthermore, 2022, now on its final stretch, has seen us obtain growth figures which seem almost unreal.

We cannot automate relations

I have been asked on occasion about the secret to this success. It must be said that this business has no secrets: our model was outlined in our website and in our blog from the start. What’s more, all forwarders work with the same shipping lines and share similar difficulties. The difference is that KENSA has an excellent team of experts (there are currently over 50 people); a group of people with experience and a great capacity for commitment, who want to help clients at all times, to overcome difficulties or to look for new solutions when all doors have been closed.

And technology? We have a state-of-the-art computer system which allows us to offer great advantages to the companies relying on us. However, for KENSA, digital tools are precisely that: tools. They help us and allow us to standardize a part of the process, speed it up and guarantee the quality of the service; but, in logistics, we know that each operation is different and that is why we cannot automate everything and just do a plug-and-play. Consequently, although it is backed up by the digital world, our vision always relies on people’s capacities and know-how, empathy and human relations.

Imagination to make what seemed impossible come true

This is how we came through the worst of the logistics storm: by solving problems that other companies thought were unsolvable; getting apparently unviable dispatches to their destinations and thus encouraging more and more clients from Mexico and from beyond its borders to call us for help. Was it magic? No, it was a way of thinking which was totally different from the usual one.

Essentially, this is KENSA’s difference: the capacity of this team to adapt to the circumstances, to seek out alternatives and never accept no as an answer. Because, if one port is closed, there may be a chance of disembarking in another port; because, if one means of transport offers exorbitant prices, there may be another one we can resort to. You need to imagine, investigate, find a way out of the maze until each operation is feasible.

Nevertheless, the challenges for the company are ongoing

Four years after founding KENSA, and even though the company is now fully consolidated, I am aware that we face new challenges in the near future. The shipping lines are already forecasting a downturn of almost 4% in the coming months and global instability is increasing. But I do know that our main challenge is not the global economic situation but rather our capacity to maintain the same enthusiasm within the team as well as the capacity they have shown to go on imagining innovative solutions in the case of each logistics project.

We have interesting plans for KENSA. The first is to move to a new office; then fill the company with fresh talent and acquire better digital tools to help us make quick decisions. All of which will be accompanied by our efforts to maintain the same spirit with which we started out on this path.
