The Plush Toys That Found a Happy Home in Mexico

These unique toys were delighting children across much of Latin America and the USA, so their creators knew they had to bring them to Mexico as well. However, entering a new market is a complex task. Without offices or local representation, the company decided to partner with KENSA to have our team serve as their local guide. The collaboration has been a resounding success.

Our client came to KENSA with two certainties. First, they wanted to distribute their successful toys in Mexico, a market known for its size and strong consumer base. Second, they knew they needed help, as they were unfamiliar with the country and its legal framework. That’s when the conversation began.

Navigating the Legal Framework for Importation

The client had a popular product but no experience in Mexico. They initially approached us because they needed a company with expertise in freight (their merchandise comes from Asia). However, in our very first conversation, they realized that before bringing in the product, they needed a clear understanding of the entire bureaucratic process they would face. They required guidance to navigate the customs requirements for importing, clearing, and releasing goods. The complexity was heightened by the fact that their product arrived in separate parts for children to assemble. We walked them through the entire process.

A Long Process to Ensure Proper Commercialization

At KENSA, it was crucial for us that the client understood every detail of Mexico’s legal framework. We know there are companies that, without local knowledge, send a shipment only to be hit with regulatory issues, resulting in delays, storage fees, and other unexpected costs that eat away at their profit margins. We needed to avoid that situation.

“We went into great detail, knowing our job was to provide thorough guidance,” says Alejandro Juárez, Sales Director at KENSA. “It wasn’t just about pointing out the regulations but breaking down the tariff and non-tariff regulations, labeling requirements, explaining each step, and estimating the time each stage would take. Of course, we also offered them the option to store their product and handle the distribution to retail points.”

KENSA carried out a precise plan, and once the client gave us the go-ahead, the operations were executed successfully, on time and as designed. Everything went according to the original plan.

“Operational planning involves a lot of people,” comments Juárez. “Our customs manager, the operations team, our warehouse coordinator… The key is to bring together this amazing team because only then can we ensure a seamless process.”

As is customary for KENSA, the entire process had full traceability from Asia to the final delivery in retail stores. Additionally, the initial plan was followed strictly, avoiding the dreaded extra costs.

Today, children in Mexico are enjoying these successful toys, and their creators have unlocked a new market, thanks to the guidance of KENSA and our boutique forwarder approach.
